Dr. Danielle Martin and the Liberals handily win byelection

Dr. Danielle Martin almost exactly mirrored Chrystia Freeland’s 2025 win in the April 13 University-Rosedale byelection. First time candidate Martin received 64.3 per cent of the vote compared to Freeland’s 64 per cent during the general election back on April 28, 2025. 

Comparatively, the NDP and the Conservatives went in dramatically opposite directions and traded places. 

Repeat candidate, Serena Purdy for the NDP, almost doubled her share of the vote from 9.9 per cent in 2025 to 18.9 per cent in the recent byelection. 

The Conservatives on the other hand, represented by another rookie candidate, Don Hodgson, went in the exact opposite direction with 12.4 per cent of the vote compared to Liz Grade’s 23.5 per cent in 2025. 

The Greens also seemed to in-crease their share at the expense of the Conservatives with Andrew Massey increasing Green support to 2.9 per cent from Ignacio Mongrell’s 1.7 per cent in 2025.

31,115 total votes were cast in the byelection compared to 62,265 in 2025. According to Elections Canada, University-Rosedale has a population of 123,812 with 93,971 electors on the list.
