EDITORIAL: Ford flailing as COVID numbers spike (Nov. 2020)

December 4th, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Ford flailing as COVID numbers spike (Nov. 2020)

Ontario’s Auditor General (AG) Bonnie Lysyk recently released a report sharply criticizing the province’s COVID-19 response. The report details a litany of failures by the government and its approach to dealing with the crisis. While some see her timing as unhelpful, to be critical as the proverbial ship is sinking, others see an opportunity to right the boat.

EDITORIAL: Confusion reigns in COVID-19 response (Oct. 2020)

November 2nd, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Confusion reigns in COVID-19 response (Oct. 2020)

As the pandemic continues and enters its second wave, the people of Ontario, and especially Toronto, Ottawa, and Peel region can count on one thing: chaos in the rules and guidelines that allegedly exist to protect us. While confusion reigns it is clear that we need a leader who knows how to lead, and if that’s too much to ask, that leader needs better people to be following himself.

EDITORIAL: When “expert” plans look more like a gamble (Aug. 2020)

September 9th, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: When “expert” plans look more like a gamble (Aug. 2020)

It’s a plan created by experts, and teachers need to step-up. That’s what Premier Ford and his ministers are saying about their back-to-school plan for Ontario students. The plan, which deserves some praise for permitting some two dozen school boards across the province to have their high school students take half their courses online, effectively reduces class sizes. The elementary school strategy, however, has garnered a less than enthusiastic response from school boards, teachers, parents, and – experts. Five hundred new nurses, and thirteen hundred additional custodians are being hired, but this will do nothing to reduce direct transmission between students or between students and staff. Let’s take a closer look.

EDITORIAL: Ford turns on tenants (July 2020)

August 7th, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Ford turns on tenants (July 2020)

One of the strangest things to happen over the course of this very strange spring was the apparent transformation of Premier Doug Ford into to a caring, compassionate leader. This illusion is fading quickly, as his government rams Bill 184 through the Ontario legislature. The new law will almost surely result in mass residential evictions of tenants who were unable to pay full rent during the COVID-19 lockdown.

EDITORIAL: Ontario gets a failing grade (May 2020)

June 15th, 2020 · 1 Comment

Long-term care homes in the Annex, public, not-for-profit, and profit alike, have fared relatively well in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly, the same cannot be said for similar facilities across the province. Before government starts pointing fingers for the tragedy that has unfolded among our most vulnerable seniors, it would do well to acknowledge its own role in the problem.

EDITORIAL: Local heroes (Apr. 2020)

May 1st, 2020 · 4 Comments

“Canadians are kind and generous.” The Prime Minsister tells us this in his daily briefings on the COVID-19 crisis. In reality, this statement is part truth and part aspirational. Fortunately in the Annex, and in a great many other parts of our city, this is proving to be true. Many residents are acting as model citizens: staying home, sharing positive messages, and helping each other out.

EDITORIAL: Modelling healthy behaviour (Mar. 2020)

March 24th, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Modelling healthy behaviour (Mar. 2020)

As we continue to try and navigate uncharted waters due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, it has been quite reassuring to hear from the prime minister in almost daily news conferences delivered from the steps of his home, Rideau Cottage. The federal government response to the crisis under Justin Trudeau’s leadership has been calm, measured, and mindful of the significant impact it has on the lives of Canadians now and in the future.

EDITORIAL: Fictions, falsehoods and a crisis in leadership (Feb. 2020)

February 27th, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Fictions, falsehoods and a crisis in leadership (Feb. 2020)

On February 21, members of all four Ontario Teacher’s Unions walked off the job leaving 2 million students out of school and leaving parents scrambling for childcare. Meanwhile, the Ontario government has been trying to sell citizens a story about striking teachers: that they are fat cats led by union boss “thugs” looking to gouge us of tax dollars. The premier likes to paint himself as a hero out to save us all, rescuing the province in a time of crisis, but the only crisis the electorate can buy into at this point is a crisis in leadership – his leadership.

EDITORIAL: Bat crazy (Jan. 2020)

January 31st, 2020 · Comments Off on EDITORIAL: Bat crazy (Jan. 2020)

The government that decimated the Endangered Species Act is now in the business of protecting bats. At least that’s what Ontario’s Minister of Environment, Jeff Yurek, claimed when he revoked the approval of the Nation Rise wind farm project on December 4. As costs pile up, so do the false premises that come with the Ford regime’s attack on green energy.
