Some Toronto residents may soon be allowed to construct a detached housing unit in their rear yard. Under the City of Toronto’s new Garden Suites project, which is currently being developed, eligible homeowners will be permitted to build an ancillary building that can be rented out or used for additional housing.

These developer-friendly changes help Doug Ford’s donor base reap record profits, but their impact on people, the environment, democracy and our affordable housing goals is mixed. Long Reach has its roots in the Annex and plans to keep growing here. The workshop gave its first performances of opera scenes in the Heliconian Club on Hazelton Avenue. As they grew, they have shifted to the larger Walmer Road Baptist Church, then Trinity-St. Paul’s Church, and in 2022 they will perform in the newly renovated Knox Presbyterian Church on Spadina Avenue.
